Postgraduate Certificate of TESOL

Overview

The Certificate is designed for newcomers to TESOL and will provide you with an understanding of the linguistic and sociocultural bases for second/foreign language learning, teaching and professional training in various aspects of TESOL. It includes the methodologies of teaching English as a second/foreign language to adults, the knowledge to select and prepare materials for TESOL, and the professional understanding to guide students and their learning of English.

  • The program includes practical classroom interactive experience in the form of a 20 hour teaching practicum
  • The program can be completed in six months by experienced teachers or in one year for those without teaching experience
  • If you complete this program with a minimum GPA of 3.0, you will be eligible to apply for the Postgraduate Diploma of Applied Linguistics.

Entry requirements

A Bachelor degree or equivalent.

English language requirements

If you have completed the NSW HSC or equivalent you satisfy the English proficiency requirements.

Work experience requirements

If you have no prior teaching experience, you will be recommended to study the two coursework units in the first semester and then complete the practicum in the second semester.

If you already have some teaching experience, you may combine the practicum with the coursework units and complete the certificate in one semester.

Notes:

Credit for APPL920 and 921 may be carried forward into the Postgraduate Diploma of Applied Linguistics with a specialisation in TESOL provided a minimum GPA of 3.0 is attained.

1. Find your chosen course in the Postgraduate Course List. Check that the course is offered in the Session that you are applying for and the application method will be shown in the 'Apply to' column.

2. Complete the Application form and follow the instructions for methods to submit and closing dates.

3. Check the Postgraduate Forms webpage to determine if your course also requires a Supplementary Form to be submitted.

Applications for Session 2 2012 open on Thursday 5th April 2012.

If you have previously enrolled and would like to re-apply for the same course, you do not re-apply through UAC.
