Overview
This diploma has been designed to cover theoretical and methodological issues relevant to practitioners in a variety of professions whose work is concerned with applied language study. Subjects are internationally relevant and focus on the development of discourse analytic skills and understanding the complex relationship between language use and context.
This diploma has three specialisations:
- General Applied Linguistics
- Teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
- Language for Specific Purposes (LSP)
This specialisation has been designed to provide a strong theoretical and practical foundation in the field of teaching English as a second or foreign language. Subjects focus on three broad areas:
- the development of skills in analysing learners' language and English as an international language;
- theoretical and practical issues in curriculum, teaching, learning and evaluation;
- understanding and designing research in these areas.
This specialisation is also suitable for those who wish to teach languages other than English.

This specialisation is designed for language professionals working or aiming to work in the area of language teaching, curriculum development, education assessment and program evaluation, teacher education, policy development, management, or community service where language and communication are critical issues.

Entry requirements
Bachelor degree or equivalent, or a Postgraduate Certificate of Applied Linguistics with a specialisation in LSP with GPA of 3.0.
A minimum of one year full time or equivalent relevant professional language teaching experience in an accredited institution.
You will also be required to submit proof of work experience in the form of a letter, on your employer's letterhead, stating the length of time employed, whether full or part time, and the nature of duties as well as a completed Supplementary Form.
English language requirements
If you have completed the NSW HSC or equivalent you satisfy the English proficiency requirements.

Work experience requirements
A minimum of one year full time or equivalent relevant professional language teaching experience in an accredited institution.

Notes:
Full credit may be carried forward into the Master of Applied Linguistics with a specialisation in TESOL provided a minimum GPA of 3.00 has been attained.
Application forms for entry into the Master of Applied Linguistics programs must be submitted by the relevant application deadlines.
APPL920 and 921 are only available as credit for articulating students of the Postgraduate Certificate of TESOL.
