Overview
This double degree is designed to develop your existing linguistics skills and to help you develop as a translator or interpreter. It is also suited to language professionals working in the area of language teaching, curriculum development, education assessment and program evaluation, teacher training, policy development, management or community services where language and communication are critical issues.
Subjects are internationally relevant and focus on the development of discourse and analytic skills and an understanding of the complex relationship between language use and context, and research in these areas.
There are two specialisations available:
- Translating Studies and TESOL
- Interpreting Studies and TESOL
Key features
- Languages available are: Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese and Korean.
- You may choose one of two specialisations: Translating Studies and TESOL or Interpreting Studies and TESOL. For further information on the specialisations, please click the 'What You Will Study' tab.
- Wide variety of subjects, including; Second Language Acquisition, Discourse and Text Analysis, Language Testing and Evaluation, and Communication Skills.
- There is an optional practice unit which allows students to gain T/I experience necessary for professional NAATI accreditation.

Suitable if you are a TESOL practitioner with professional interests in translating and interpreting, and vice versa. Also suitable if you are a language professional, working or aiming to work in the areas of language teaching, curriculum development, education assessment and program evaluation, teacher training, policy development or community services where language and communication are critical issues.

Entry requirements
You will need:
- A Bachelor degree with a minimum GPA of 2.5 in T&I, Linguistics, Language of Cultural Studies, or other related fields.
- IELTS 7.0 OR equivalent OR completion of 3 year Bachelor degree in Australia with a pass in the T&I assessment task.
- At least two years English language teaching experience in a recognised institution or Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics with a specialisation in TESOL with a GPA of 3.0.
If your first language is not English, you must have IELTS (Academic) 7.0 with a minimum score of 6.5 in all bands or TOEFL 600 or CTOEFL 250. If you have a lower level of English, you may enrol in the Translation and Interpreting Preparatory Program (TIPP) taught in the Centre for Macquarie English (CME) at Macquarie University.
You must apply for the internal availability of this course, however you may be able to complete certain units externally.

Work experience requirements
You will need to provide proof of at least two years relevant professional language teaching experience in a recognised institution.
Notes:
Chinese (Mandarin), Korean and Japanese are available for commencement in Semester 1 and 2.
You will be required to complete a Translating & Interpreting Academic Writing Skills workshop. Workshops are free and will be 3 hours long, you will have to complete this workshop in your first semester. Certificates of attendance will be provided.
This program is designed for on campus study, however some of the Applied Linguistics units can be taken externally.

This degree has been accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) since July 2003.
Career Opportunities
There are opportunities as a freelance or in-house interpreter or translator in a variety of settings. You can also use translating and interpreting to work as a language expert or consultant in all types of public and private organisations. There are also opportunities as language professionals, working the areas of language teaching, curriculum development, education assessment and program evaluation, teacher training, policy development, management or community services where language and communication are critical issues.

I am doing the double degree program to enhance my bilingual skills as well as my language teaching skills.
At Macquarie, I appreciate the enlightening guidance from my teachers and I enjoy working in teams with other interesting and diligent students. I've also been fortunate enough to meet language teachers from around the world who I can share experiences and ideas of language teaching with.
What I acquire at Macquarie will enable me to have more choices for my career plan - to be a professional interpreter in Australia or to continue being a language teacher, which I am currently doing part-time.
