Master of Translating and Interpreting with the degree of Master of Applied Linguistics with a specialisation in Translation Studies and TESOL

Overview

This double degree is designed to develop your existing linguistics skills and to help you develop as a translator or interpreter. It is also suited to language professionals working in the area of language teaching, curriculum development, education assessment and program evaluation, teacher training, policy development, management or community services where language and communication are critical issues.

Subjects are internationally relevant and focus on the development of discourse and analytic skills and an understanding of the complex relationship between language use and context, and research in these areas.

This specialisation will allow you to develop your translation abilities and provide you with a strong theoretical and practical foundation in the field of teaching English as a second or foreign language. You will closely examine translation practice, subtitling and the use of technology in translation.

Suitable if you are a TESOL practitioner with professional interests in translating and interpreting, and vice versa. Also suitable if you are a language professional, working or aiming to work in the areas of language teaching, curriculum development, education assessment and program evaluation, teacher training, policy development or community services where language and communication are critical issues.

Entry requirements

You will need:

  • A Bachelor degree with a minimum GPA of 2.5 in T&I, Linguistics, Language of Cultural Studies, or other related fields.
  • IELTS 7.0 OR equivalent OR completion of 3 year Bachelor degree in Australia with a pass in the T&I assessment task.
  • At least two years English language teaching experience in a recognised institution or Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics with a specialisation in TESOL with a GPA of 3.0.

If your first language is not English, you must have IELTS (Academic) 7.0 with a minimum score of 6.5 in all bands or TOEFL 600 or CTOEFL 250. If you have a lower level of English, you may enrol in the Translation and Interpreting Preparatory Program (TIPP) taught in the Centre for Macquarie English (CME) at Macquarie University.

Work experience requirements

You will need to provide proof of at least two years relevant professional language teaching experience in a recognised institution.

Notes:

Chinese (Mandarin), Korean and Japanese are available in Semesters 1 and 2.

You will be required to complete a Translating & Interpreting Academic Writing Skills workshop. Workshops are free and will be 3 hours long, you will have to complete this workshop in your first semester. Certificates of attendance will be provided.
