Overview
There are strong links between international relations and translating and interpreting, both pedagogically and in terms of job opportunities. This degree will allow you to acquire skills in both international relations and translating and interpreting, making you highly employable. International organisations, a major focus of international relations study, are a major employer of graduates in translating and interpreting.
This specialisation will allow you to develop your interpreting abilities through a range of units covering topics including;
- Community based interpreting
- Conference interpreting
- Discourse and Text Analysis
- Communication Skills
You may also choose units which examine international relations more closely.

Suitable if you have an excellent knowledge of 2 languages: English and either Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese or Korean, and if you wish to acquire professional translation and interpreting skills and an in-depth understanding of international affairs.

Entry requirements
You will need:
- A Bachelor degree with a minimum GPA of 2.5 in T&I, Linguistics, Language of Cultural Studies, or other related fields.
- IELTS 7.0 OR equivalent OR completion of 3 year Bachelor degree in Australia with a pass in the T&I assessment task.
If your first language is not English, you must have IELTS (Academic) 7.0 with a minimum score of 6.5 in all bands or TOEFL 600 or CTOEFL 250. If you have a lower level of English, you may enrol in the Translation and Interpreting Preparatory Program (TIPP) taught in the Centre for Macquarie English (CME) at Macquarie University.
If you have completed all of your primary and high school education within Australian schools, you will be deemed to have met the English language proficiency levels.

Notes:
Chinese (Mandarin), Korean and Japanese are available for commencement in Semester 1 and 2.
You will be required to complete a Translating & Interpreting Academic Writing Skills workshop. Workshops will be 3 hours long, and will be offered free. You must take the responsibility to complete this workshop in their first semester. Certificates of attendance will be provided.
