Overview
The Master of Applied Linguistics degree has been designed to cover theoretical and methodological issues relevant to practitioners in a variety of professions whose work is concerned with applied language study. The degree is internationally relevant and focuses on the development of discourse analytic skills and understanding the complex relationship between language use, context and research in these areas.
This specialisation has been designed to provide a strong theoretical and practical foundation in the field of teaching English as a second or foreign language. Subjects focus on three broad areas:
- the development of skills in analysing learners' language and English as an international language;
- theoretical and practical issues in curriculum, teaching, learning and evaluation;
- understanding and designing research in these areas.
This specialisation is also suitable for those who wish to teach languages other than English.

Entry requirements
Bachelor degree or equivalent or Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics with a specialisation in TESOL with a GPA of 3.0.
Minimum of two years full time or equivalent relevant professional language teaching experience in an accredited teaching institution. Applied Linguistics applicants are also required to submit proof of work experience in the form of a letter, on their employer's letterhead stating length of time employed, whether full or part time and nature of duties as well as a completed Supplementary Form.
English language requirements
If you have completed the NSW HSC or equivalent you satisfy the English proficiency requirements.

Work experience requirements
A minimum of two years full time or equivalent relevant professional experience. You will also be required to submit proof of work experience in the form of a letter, on your employer's letterhead stating length of time employed, whether full time or part time and nature of duties as well as a completed Supplementary Form.
Notes:
If you successfully complete the Master of Applied Linguistics and achieve a grade of CREDIT (GPA 3.0) or above in your program, you can apply for entry into the Postgraduate Certificate of Research Preparation (Human Sciences) to complete a dissertation.
