This program provides students with a unique speciality in an exciting area of study in ancient history. It provides a focused methodological approach to understanding the transition from the classical world to the medieval and Byzantine worlds which in turn form the basis for the emergence of modern Europe and western society.

Areas of study in Late Antiquity include: the archaeology of key cities of the Roman Near East; Silk Road studies; religious change in the Roman Empire; early Christian and Byzantine art and architecture; paganism and Judaism; the decline of the Roman Empire; monasticism in Egypt; Coptic art; Christian thought; and Egyptian society, economy and culture following Roman conquest.
