Our Graduates
Akshay Vishwanath
Master of Environmental Studies
Graduated 2010
After finishing his Bachelor of Environmental Science degree in India and returning to Kenya to work for a year and a half in wildlife conservation, Akshay realised the skills he had and those he still needed to develop. “I wanted to find a Masters degree that filled all those gaps,” says Akshay. “The Master of Environmental Studies course at Macquarie perfectly fit.”
As part of his degree Akshay completed a research component. Akshay spent two months in Kenya’s South Rift region conducting his research. “Essentially I looked at how to work with rural communities to protect wildlife and how communities can benefit from conservation, with a focus on governance and policy implementation.”
“What I learnt at Macquarie really came into play during my fieldwork. I learnt new ways of looking at things. Before I came to Macquarie my background was purely science-based. Macquarie taught me that Wildlife Conservation is hugely political. I studied things like social impact assessments and cross-cultural decision-making.” Now that Akshay has completed his Master of Environmental Studies he plans to work in the fields of wildlife conservation, environmental management and governance.
Our Expertise
Greg Walkerden
Program Coordinator for the Environmental Management and Environmental Studies programs
Greg Walkerden is the Program Coordinator for the Environmental Management and Environmental Studies programs in the Graduate School of the Environment (GSE). He joined the GSE after 17 years working professionally in environmental management, in both government and consulting roles. His work has won a number of awards, including awards for catchment management, stormwater management and capacity building. His research is focused on 'how to …?' questions - on what works in practice. As a result his work is transdisciplinary: bounded by what needs to be explored to find approaches that work, rather than by the limits of disciplinary questions.
