Overview

The program has been developed in collaboration with professional Australian Radiopharmaceutical Scientists, members of Maquarie University's Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences and the Australian School of Advanced Medicine (ASAM). Its purpose is to train graduates with a chemistry or biomolecular sciences background in the preparation and labelling of radiopharmaceuticals in diagnostic and therapeutic medicine. It is highly integrative spanning physics, chemistry, biomolecular sciences and medicine. It encompasses nuclear science, radiation safety and chemistry, particularly that relevant to drug design and the radiolabelling of molecules. It contains a component of laboratory management, with emphasis on quality control, quality assurance and documentation to a standard required by external auditing authorities. Importantly, it also aims to develop research skills, including literature searching, project planning, experimental design, statistical analysis and scientific communication.

Key features

  • Designed with the intention to satisfy all the education requirements for professional accreditation by the Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine
  • Provides highly relevant contemporary training with access to the world-class research expertise of the Australian School of Advanced Medicine (ASAM) and the state-of-the-art facilities of Cyclopet including an on-site PET cyclotron, radiochemistry and GMP radiopharmaceutical production facility and a PET centre
  • Highly integrative program spanning physics, chemistry, biomolecular sciences and medicine.
