By combining arts with primary education, you'll have over forty arts majors to choose from. You'll study teaching methodology, participate in a primary school based Professional Experience program and satisfy the Key Learning Area (KLA) content requirements of the NSW Institute of Teachers:

The main focus is on preparing you to work as a primary school teacher.
Demographic analysis is a powerful tool that can explain a number of social, economic and business phenomena.
Demography includes the study of:
- the size, structure and distribution of populations
- how populations change over time because of births, deaths, migration and ageing.
Changes in populations affect a wide range of issues:
- the quantities of different products bought
- the size and composition of workforces
- the demand for public services, such as health, education, and welfare
- the pressures on the natural environment
- voting patterns.

- Macquarie University is the only university in NSW to offer undergraduate major in demography.
- Demographic analysis can assist in planning marketing campaigns, site location decisions, electoral campaign strategies and public sector resource allocation decisions, such as where to build schools and hospitals.

Demographers are in demand in the public and private sector, here and overseas. Demographic skills can be applied widely including in business and finance by investment companies, insurance companies, banks and marketing consulting and market research firms in areas such as tracking trends, market analysis and site location. In the public sector they are used in the collection and analysis of data, in planning and in assisting policy formulation. Examples of workplaces that utilise demographics include the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Department of Education, and research organisations.
Average starting salary
Starting salaries for demographers vary depending upon which industry they enter, and are usually in the above average range $42,000–$70,000.

Our Graduates
Kirsty Wright
Kirsty completed a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Demography and Marketing in 2006. She also completed a marketing focused Honours degree in 2007.
She is currently working at Sweeney Research where she works on both qualitative and quantitative research in a variety of areas including branding, advertising, communications, new product development, concept testing, consumer segmentation and multivariate research.
Prior to joining Sweeney, Kirsty worked at The Nielsen Company on the Living in Australia study for two years.
Our Expertise
Fei Guo
Fei is a Senior Lecturer in Demography. She received her PhD from the University of Hawaii and the East-West Centre and has held academic positions at ANU and the University of Wollongong.
Fei's teaching interests range from conventional demography subjects to marketing research methods and experiential learning in international business studies. She has taught both undergraduate and postgraduate subjects and has also contributed to honours program teaching.
