By combining arts with primary education, you'll have over forty arts majors to choose from. You'll study teaching methodology, participate in a primary school based Professional Experience program and satisfy the Key Learning Area (KLA) content requirements of the NSW Institute of Teachers:

The main focus is on preparing you to work as a primary school teacher.
Public sector managers formulate, monitor and report progress on programs and policies to deliver services to the community.
Work in the public sector can involve challenging assignments such as:

- communicating with government and community agencies
- managing organisations and their people.

Average starting salary
Starting salaries for graduates vary between each Public Service and usually also across departments and agencies. As a guide, graduates could expect to begin their first year of employment with a salary in the range $50 000 - $60 000. Entry is often through a Graduate Program, which includes job rotation and further training, with salary advancement on completion.
Substantial career progression is possible into management and executive levels.

Patrick Corr
Patrick Corr studied Demography and Statistics at Macquarie University in the early 1980s graduating with a Bachelor of Science. He has been working with the Australian Bureau of Statistics for 29 years in a range of roles in Sydney and Canberra. Patrick is also a member of the Statistical Society of Australia, the Australian Population Association and the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population. Patrick found the multi-disciplinary flexibility of study at Macquarie University has equipped him well in his career progression in the public sector. Patrick has recently joined the Macquarie University Department of Business External Advisory Committee.
Our Expertise
Dr Meena Chavan
Dr Chavan is a Senior Lecturer in Organisational and Management studies within the Department of Marketing and Management and teaches in the areas of management and international business. She is the program coordinator for the public sector major. She has been in academia for the past 25 years and held senior roles as undergraduate director, postgraduate program director and chair of the course management committee. Her research explores the public service areas of telecommunications, hospitals, building and construction industry, and she has also published widely in the area of small business, diversity management quality management and sustainability and the environment.
