Overview

Teach in secondary schools. Become a flexible, open minded and confident secondary school teacher who is responsive to academic needs.

By combining arts with education you'll study the principles and techniques of secondary teaching. You'll then specialise by choosing:

An academic major in your first teaching subject:

  • English
  • History
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Languages
  • Geography
  • Economics
  • Business Studies

And an academic major or minor in your second teaching subject:

  • Drama
  • English
  • Geography
  • History
  • Information & Communication Technologies
  • Languages
  • Legal Studies
  • Society and Culture
  • Maths
  • Science

The main focus is on preparing you to work as a high school teacher.

The Cultural Studies major examines culture in its forms and practices, exposing the everyday practices, relations and objects that shape our world.

You’ll gain a thorough understanding of how we make cultural meaning and investigate the social and political dimensions of culture.

Aspects of culture include:

  • issues to do with art, media, communication and representation
  • the practice of everyday life, from shopping to graffiti
  • the construction and deconstruction of social, cultural and personal identities
  • the values and ideas shaping national, regional and global cultures.

Adrian Lee

'The choice of subjects at Macquarie is fantastic- in addition to core subjects I have studied units in anthropology, computer studies, linguistics, geography and Spanish.

It is great being able to broaden your academic horizons while still working on what you are passionate about. Throughout my degree I have completed internships which have provided work experience and also enhanced my degree. The transition to full-time work is not nearly as daunting as it used to be.'
