Overview

Teach in secondary schools. Become a flexible, open minded and confident secondary school teacher who is responsive to academic needs.

By combining arts with education you'll study the principles and techniques of secondary teaching. You'll then specialise by choosing:

An academic major in your first teaching subject:

  • English
  • History
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Languages
  • Geography
  • Economics
  • Business Studies

And an academic major or minor in your second teaching subject:

  • Drama
  • English
  • Geography
  • History
  • Information & Communication Technologies
  • Languages
  • Legal Studies
  • Society and Culture
  • Maths
  • Science

The main focus is on preparing you to work as a high school teacher.

Gender Studies is offered through the Women’s Studies, Gender and Sexuality (IWS) program in the Department of Sociology.

Gender Studies investigates what it means to be a woman or man in society at different times and places. You will look closely at the impact of gender, sex and sexuality on people’s lives at home, at work, on the streets, in the classroom.

You can undertake study as a general interest, combine with work in another field, or complete a major within a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Social Science.

'Who knew writing philosophy and studying feminism could lead to such a fun job eating my way across Sydney for the Alternative Media Group. Every day I thank my lucky stars!

Philosophy taught me how to think, and how to form or refute an argument. Cultural and Critical Studies taught me that meaning can be everywhere and in everything. Womens Studies gave me the balls to demand a fair go. All three combined led me to my dream job with the skills to do it justice, so thank you!'
